Herbie finds his voice!

Did we mention that Herbie seems to be part-hound? He has become quite the talker, and is very vocal. He lets Foster Mom know how happy he is to be warm and safe with a special place on the couch reserved just for him. He also speaks up when one of his temporary canine siblings gets to go out for a walk - he so wants to join them but not quite yet.

The Vet performed a "joint tap" on Herbie's front right leg on Thursday, March 11 to check for infection because the joint still feels warm to the touch. So Herbie is now on a round of antibiotics, awaiting the results from the Vet on Monday.

The best news is that Herbie's injuries on his face and back of his neck are healing well! His hair is growing back in nicely. Foster Mom attributes this to the twice-daily application of Bag Balm and Emu oil. According to Foster Mom, this may be the secret fountain of youth but for now she recommends it for canine use only. (available at www.drugstore.com)

And add "The Herbster" as a new nickname for this very happy, friendly dog. Lucky to have been rescued and letting us know how thankful he is.

Your support for Herbie is truly helping him heal!

Herbie has a Prognosis!

Thank you so much to all of Herbie's Fans who keep asking how he is doing! He is settling in very nicely at home with Foster Mom and Dad, eating high quality food, starting to put some weight on and taking fish oil to help his coat regain its shine.

The Vet has given Herbie a better prognosis than we expected - that is the good news!

Medically, here are the facts:

One of the attack bites that Herbie sustained was a deep puncture wound into a joint and there is still some swelling and heat in the joint area. The limping indicates pain, the heat could be from an infection- yet Herbie has a good range of motion, which is promising. If the anti-inflammatory Herbie is now taking is not enough, the next medical step is to sedate Herbie to take a sample of the joint fluid to determine the extent of the infection. Best case scenario: Herbie will need aggressive antibiotics and physical therapy (dog swimming pool!) and/or cleaning of the joint by a surgeon to regain full use of his leg. The great news is that it does not look like - at this time - that Herbie will lose his leg. Yay for Herbie!

Dentally - (this is a Full Report!) - Herbie lost a tooth somewhere along the way (perhaps from scrounging for food in the frozen ground?) - and has another tooth worn down to nothing. So dental care will be needed too!

YOUR continuing support is what is making it possible to Heal Herbie!!

We couldn't do this without YOU!

Herbie Makes a Guest Appearance!

Special Guest Appearance:

By popular demand, Herbie will be making a special guest appearance today during the first part of the Adoption Event hosted by Lucky Dog Animal Rescue this afternoon on Capitol Hill from Noon to 12:30 p.m. at Chateaux Animaux, 5248 Sth Street, S.E. - www.luckydoganimalrescue.org (adoption event itself runs until 2:00 p.m. - come meet all of the other Lucky Dogs available for adoption!).

Herbie's Health:

Herbie is looking forward to meeting his public but Foster Mom wants everyone to know he isn't quite ready for adoption - just yet. Foster Mom has been taking him to the local Vet who has put Herbie on Rimadyl because his previous wounds may be causing some deep, chronic inflammation - causing him significant pain. The Vet has not ruled out possible infection in the affected joints. Foster Mom says the plan is to wait another week to see how Herbie does on the Rimadyl alone before doing further tests to check on infection in his leg. Even the Vet is impressed with with Herbie's strong happy spirit despite what he has endured~

Interested in Adopting Herbie?

To the wonderful people who have expressed an interest in Healing Herbie and perhaps making him your own - Herbie(via Foster Mom) is most grateful for your interest and support!

Can you please submit an Adoption Application (www.luckydoganimalrescue.org) so we can find out more about your family? Due to the great number of applications already received for Herbie, back-up applications will be taken in the order received.

But wait - Foster Mom encourages you to look at the Lucky Dog website and check out the Photos and the Stories of over 150 other Lucky Dogs also looking looking for their forever homes. Their stories may not have gotten the press that Herbie's has but each of them tells a similar tale - abandoned by their owners when they had to move to a new place that would not take dogs or sent to a shelter when times got hard. Each of them misses being part of a family and they are all looking for a wonderful adoptive home just like Herbie!

So please - check out Herbie's canine colleagues at www.luckydoganimalrescue.org - and submit an application for a dog or dogs that look like they might just be the right fit for you!

And don't forget to donate what you can to help Herbie Heal! All donations will go to Herbie's medical care.

A Special Shout Out:

Foster Mom and everyone at Lucky Dog (all volunteers! want to join us?) is so appreciative of the attention Herbie has received from other bloggers and in the news.

And even though this story is about Herbie and his journey - the best part is that it is bringing awareness of all the other Herbies out there - and the dedicated rescue groups that volunteer to find each abandoned dog a new forever home.

Each of you is truly a lifesaver!

Thank you for helping to Heal Herbie.

Meet Herbie - the Love Bug!

On February 14 (ironically Valentine's Day!), a very cold day in the middle of the snowiest winter ever, an animal shelter in Franklin County, Virginia, near the Blue Ridge Mountains, took in a 3 to 4 year old German Shepherd mix named Herbie, brought to the shelter by a local resident who recognized him as a dog that belonged to a family in her neighborhood - except that family had been forced to move away 3 months ago! Herbie had been abandoned! By the time Herbie arrived at the shelter - he weighed only 37 lbs and had a body temperature of 94 degrees, 6 degrees below normal. He was emaciated and near death.

A few weeks later Herbie was wagging his tail, devouring his food and watching the Olympics from the comfy couch at the home of his new Foster Family and is - slowly, slowly - on the mend.

The Shelter in Virginia contacted Lucky Dog Animal Rescue - http://www.luckydoganimalrescue.org/ - who brought Herbie up to the D.C. area last week, committed to providing Herbie with the medical care he needs and a foster family to take care of him while he heals.

Not only did Herbie have to fend for himself in the worst winter in years, Shelter staff think that Herbie was attacked - twice - by a pack of dogs - leaving him with multiple bite wounds and gashes on his neck, face and back of both front legs. He endured two blizzards, nothing but garbage to eat and arrived at the Shelter in very poor shape. What smarts and courage Herbie must have had to survive on his own for 3 months!

When Herbie first arrived off the transport from south-western Virginia, he was a bit bewildered. At his foster family's home, his tail was tucked in, he didn't want to eat and his tail would not wag. He hardly left the couch, and when he did he stepped gingerly on his right front leg and did a 3 legged-hop. And naturally, he did not want to go outside in the cold at all!

After a few days of lots of affection and good food (his appetite is back in a big way!), Foster Mom reports he is settling in nicely. Newly named "Love Bug" Herbie for his tail wagging ways, he has happily joined in the family, friendly to people, dogs and even cats! His happy-go-lucky personality has started to emerge, now that he is in a place of trust.

And on Day 5, two big firsts for Herbie:

1. He has started to use his right front leg, ever so tentatively at first but more and more.

2. And when a TV crew from Fox News, Channel 5 in D.C. showed up last night to interview him (and his Foster Family), they were surprised that he met them at the front door with an affectionate greeting and then proceeded to ham it up in front of the cameras!

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue will stick with Herbie - the luckiest survivor of this brutal winter - as he heals. His medical costs could rise up to $5,000 to make sure he can again easily walk on all fours. His Foster Family will keep showing him that there is a lot of love in the world until he finds his forever home.

Please help Herbie Heal! Go to - http://www.luckydognanimalrescue.org/ - to donate to help with Herbie's medical costs.

Once Herby is fully healed, he will be available for adoption. As his Foster Mom says, whoever adopts this dog is getting one special canine companion.
